Repair and newbuilding shipyard currently has five specialised ships on order
Looking back on the year 2022 prompts the shipyard in Rostock-Gehlsdorf to issue a proudly worded press release, as they write that nothing like this has ever happened before. The reason for the satisfaction is the five special ships currently under construction. Two 23 metre long patrol boats with a flat hull are being built for the German Directorate General of Customs. The ships will be deployed in the Wadden Sea in future. The construction of two 20-metre-long STS workboats (security, transport, towing) in cooperation with the SET shipyard in Tangermünde fulfils a Bundeswehr order. In addition, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) is expecting the completion of its twelfth new sea rescue boat ordered from the shipyard. Construction also recently began on a fishing patrol boat for the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The ship types were all designed and projected in-house, and the halls are also fully utilised with numerous orders in the repair and maintenance sector. In 2022, there was a double-digit percentage increase in turnover in this area, but the shipyard did not publish more detailed figures. Christian Schmoll, Managing Director of the shipyard, expects the energy transformation to provide an additional boost in the coming years. He believes that older ships will have to be retrofitted and that newbuilds will hardly be realisable without efficient and emission-free ship operation.
Progress is also being made in terms of personnel: a new 20-strong research and development team has been set up. Including the 17 trainees, the number of employees has increased to around 130.
Positive stability on the Warnow, a good occasion for a toast at the end of the year, finds marineforum. We will stay tuned.
