The town in the district of Pinneberg had publicised that the tourist attraction on the Elbe was defective and could not be repaired due to the poor budget situation. As a result, a local company took a look at the system and got one of two loudspeakers working again.
In the meantime, both loudspeakers on the maritime flagship have been replaced with new ones, free of charge for the city of Wedel. This prevented the 'Welcome Point' from falling silent for any length of time and all 'pots' were once again welcomed and bid farewell with the national anthem and well-meaning words.
Background
"As a mark of respect to the seafarers", this tradition has been practised since June 1952. At that time, a ship's greeting rang out across the Elbe for the first time from the "Willkomm-Höft": "Welcome to Hamburg, we look forward to welcoming you to the Port of Hamburg". Since then, several hundred thousand ships of more than 1,000 gross tonnage from all over the world have been welcomed in Wedel, marked on the nautical charts as 'Welcome Point'. The ships are greeted and bid farewell with their national anthem and in the respective national language. What seems so obvious and simple to outsiders required extensive and lengthy precise planning. Over 150 national anthems and welcome texts had to be played and recorded.
Guests can marvel at this beautiful ceremony free of charge. In the restaurant 'Das NEUE Schulauer Fährhaus', in the beer garden or directly on the jetty, you will hear many details and information about the ships exclusively, spoken by one of the currently five welcome captains.
