The Berlin has been in action a lot over the last few months. Commander Frigate Captain Stefan Klatt (52) said, "Over the past four months, I have been working with the 'Berlin' and my crew on the Operation 'Irini' took part in this mission. Our task in this mission led by the European Union was to stop the smuggling of weapons across the Mediterranean to Libya. We were supported by a Lithuanian shipboard team and, at times, by a German maritime reconnaissance aircraft P3C 'Orion' from Nordholz. We have travelled more than 27,000 nautical miles on our patrols and, together with our Lithuanian comrades, have carried out five boardings, i.e. cargo inspections on merchant ships, 20 friendly approaches and over 400 radio interrogations. I think that we have made the Mediterranean a little safer and also built up trust in the mission and the EU. On board were also the following vessels Sea Lynx. In addition to logistical tasks for transporting personnel and materials, the helicopters acted as a flying eye, increasing the range of the EGV and transporting boarding teams to ships to be inspected. "Another special feature of this mission was the

Use of a supply ship as a kind of 'interceptor' in an embargo operation. This used to be unthinkable, but nowadays it has become the norm, at the latest with us. Today, the 'Berlin' leads all statistics of the operation. The most radio interceptions, friendly approaches and boardings that a ship has carried out in the 'Irini' mission to date. After their return, the crew will sign off for a well-deserved holiday. Afterwards, the task force provider "Berlin" will support the flagship at the "Weekend on the Jade" in Wilhelmshaven. In November, the Federal President will then use the ship as a representation platform during a visit to Oslo.
