Hamburg can do that

What would the Hanseatic city be without its multifaceted maritime economy? Although naval shipbuilding with its suppliers and service providers is rarely recognised, it is a world-class technology player. The greater Hamburg area has traditionally been a centre of gravity for the maritime industry and economy, be it innovative (naval) shipbuilding, global maritime shipping, the diverse range of ship chandlers and shipbuilding suppliers, effective maritime logistics, the port industry or the world's leading technology providers and users of marine and offshore technology. Together with a comprehensive range of maritime services and world-renowned maritime educational, research and testing facilities as well as maritime associations and organisations, the greater Hamburg area is the location of the maritime industry and economy in Europe....

Gorch Fock back in Kiel - The odyssey's final act....

It's done. After more than 2,200 days in the shipyard, the German Navy's training sailing ship, the Gorch Fock, has returned to its traditional berth in its home harbour - and the pier now also bears the name of the poet Rudolf Kinau, alias "Gorch Fock". The ship, repeatedly derided in many media as a "ship of fools, a three-masted circus, a million-dollar grave", has officially ended its shipyard phase and is once again available to the German Navy as a training and representation platform. Following the handover in Wilhelmshaven on World Maritime Day, which took place in a small, high-ranking ceremony, the Gorch Fock met with Vice Admiral Karsten Stawitzky, Head of the Armaments Department of the BMVg and...

First container ship refuelled with SNG

On 29 September 2021, the first commercial container ship was refuelled with CO2-neutral synthetic LNG in Brunsbüttel. This makes the "ElbBLUE", owned by the German shipping company Elbdeich and registered in Limassol, the first ship in the world to run on synthetic natural gas (SNG). Built in China in 2012, the container ship is 153 metres long and has a displacement of 13,200 tonnes and can transport 1,036 containers. Originally powered by heavy fuel oil, the MAN 8L48/60B diesel engine from MAN Energy Solutions was converted to the MAN 51/60DF four-stroke engine in 2017. At the time, the ship was still called the "Wes Amelie" and attracted international attention with its drive unit. The so-called multi-fuel engine enables the use of...

Indian Ocean Region - India's strategic view across the ocean

The geostrategic tine in the Indian Ocean is a commitment: with a coastline of 2,000 kilometres on both sides and a wide view across the entire ocean from East Africa and Indonesia/Western Australia to Antarctica, it is a fundamental concern of the Indian Navy under Chinese pressure to keep an eye on movements on this immense body of water. It is at least worth a try, as three quarters of global maritime trade and around half of all consumer goods pass through this sea area. Of course, this cannot be done alone, not without an Information Fusion Centre - Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) as the central organisation and a maritime information exchange agreement, on which...

Procurement: billions for the navy

Important major projects were finalised just in time for the German parliamentary elections. These procurements will characterise the navy for decades to come. On 23 June, before the summer recess, the Defence and Budget Committees of the German Bundestag presented 27 so-called 25-billion-euro bills with a total volume of over 19 billion euros for the Bundeswehr for approval and gave the green light for procurement. The navy will receive 7.3 billion euros of this for the procurement of three fleet service boats, two double-hull tankers, two submarines (U 212CD), five maritime reconnaissance vessels, two measuring boats for WTD 71 and the modernisation of the 123 frigates and minehunting boats...
