The Cold War had just ended and Germany was reunited when the frigate "Vasco da Gama" was commissioned by the Portuguese Navy at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg on 18 January 1991. The order for the construction of three Meko 200PN type ships was signed in 1985. The keel for the type ship, the "Vasco da Gama", was laid on 2 February 1989 and the ship was launched on 26 June of the same year. With a length of 115 metres and a width of just under 15 metres, the ships displace a good 2900 tonnes. Something new from the shipbuilding industry: The Dutch shipyard Damen started cutting the first steel plates for the Combat Support Ship "Den Helder" last December. What's special about this? This work was not actually planned until February 2021. But then the planners took a closer look at the extensive coronavirus measures at the shipyard in Galati, Romania, and at the suppliers. An Bulgariens Schwarzmeer-Strand tummeln sich namhafte Schiffbauer wie Damen und Fincantieri und liefern – wie zuletzt an Pakistan – preisgünstig hergestellte Plattformen mittlerer Größe. Anfang November konnte Lürssen dort einen nicht gerade großen, aber wichtigen Auftrag sichern. Verteidigungsminister Krassimir Karakachanow unterzeichnete einen Vertrag über den Bau von zwei „Modularen Mehrzweck-Patrouillenbooten“ MMPV im finanziellen Volumen von einer halben Milliarde Euro mit dem Bremer Schiffbau-Unternehmen. Gebaut werden sollen die auf dem OPV-90-Design aufsetzenden, etwa 2000 Tonnen großen Schiffe bei der MTG Dolphin Werft in Varna mit Auslieferungsterminen 2025 und 2026.
