At around 2.45 p.m. (CET) on 14 January 2024, there was an attack on a US Navy ship in the sea area off Hodeidah. According to reports from US Central Command, the missile fired at the "USS Laboon" (DDG 58, 1st batch, in service since 1995) was intercepted and neutralised by an unidentified US fighter aircraft. Ukraine will not be able to participate in the mine clearance operation agreed between the Black Sea navies of Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. As expected, Turkey has told its NATO allies that it will not allow the two minehunting units (M108 HMS "Grimsby" and M112 HMS "Shoreham") handed over to Ukraine by the UK to transit its waters through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits. Spain's government has given the green light for the stationing of two more US Navy ships, bringing the number of US destroyers stationed in Rota to six. In 2014, the USA began stationing a total of four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG 51-119, max. 9700 tonnes displacement) permanently in Europe.
