German Navy - good even without aircraft carriers?

Chuck Ridgway, US-American, takes up the cudgels for the German Navy - our capabilities from an international perspective.

It's certainly not all for the best in the German navy - and that's something to complain about! However, it is another to recognise and respectfully acknowledge the achievements of the servicewomen and men of the Navy and the leading position of German weaponry and shipbuilding technology. Even in public.

Being good - even without an aircraft carrier

You don't have to judge everything from the black end, where the light may be dim and the prospects bleak. The efforts and opportunities of the German Navy can also be viewed in the light and from an international perspective. It is important to keep an eye on both ends of the performance spectrum. Because more credible than emphasising one's own capabilities is a well-founded comment from the corner of the "Big Boys" about a fellow combatant whose pockets are nowhere near as full as "Uncle Sam". And whose population is not nearly as blessed as that of the United States with maritime understanding and the will to be strong.

Experts on the subject

Chuck Ridgway wrote this commentary. He was a naval officer in the US Navy (surface warfare), then spent ten years at the NATO Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre in Lisbon before becoming an advisor to NGOs and agencies involved in security policy. You can take his views seriously. He gained a good insight into the thinking and actions of the German Navy during a three-year exchange as a crew member of the frigate F 214 "Lübeck" from 2000 to 2003.
