From a press release by the Rostock Naval Command.
On Friday, 12 November 2021, the sea battalion will be holding a 12 km charity run at its Eckernförde and Alt Duvenstedt locations between 8 am and 10 am. The aim of the fundraising is to support the 48th German contingent in Lebanon in its charitable work on site for the "Mosan Centre for Special Needs".
Commander Frigate Captain Norman Bronsch (40) describes it as follows: "After the long cuts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, my aim is to bring the men and women of the sea battalion closer together again by overcoming challenges together. And being able to do something good in the process is all the more rewarding."
The run for a good cause was inspired by a charity run organised by UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon). The soldiers of the sea battalion not only wanted to provide support on deployment, but also at home. "The military sense of duty of our forces regularly goes beyond the mere fulfilment of military missions and we can all be proud of that - and we are," said the commander of the sea battalion.
Background information
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observer mission has been part of the naval battalion's deployment portfolio for many years. Against the backdrop of the drastically deteriorating economic and security situation in Lebanon, some soldiers from the 47th DEU UNIFIL contingent, including members of the naval battalion, became involved in the "Mosan Centre for Special Needs" in the city of Tyre. This centre provides care and education for children with physical and/or mental disabilities. In cooperation with a German school from Emsland, the first donations have already been collected this year and handed over on site. The "Die Bundeswehr hilft Kindern weltweit e.V." association acts as an umbrella organisation for the funds collected by the naval battalion and will ensure that they are passed on to the "Mosan Centre for Special Needs".
