Frigate Sachsen receives modernised digital radio
The Frigate Saxony relies on modern communication technology. A new TETRA radio system will in future ensure Secure and reliable connection on board.
The modernisation of digital radio on the Frigate Saxony ensures secure and reliable communication. A TETRA digital radio solution from Motorola Solutions is now in use. It improves communication on board - especially for ship security teams, damage control forces and the command centre.

The Frigate Saxony will be equipped with portable TETRA handheld radios MTP8550Ex from Motorola Solutions. These enable interference-free and secure communication via digital radio.
To mark the official commissioning, Axel Kukuk, Vice President Europe at Motorola Solutions, presented a TETRA handheld radio painted in the Navy's colours to the BAAINBw project manager and the commander of the frigate Sachsen.
Motorola delivers new digital radio solution
As Motorola Solutions announced on 6 February, the new system is based on the DIMETRA X Core Deployable System. This solution was developed specifically for military, defence and security organisations and offers:
- Highly secure communication for ship safety teams and operations management
- Real-time overview of the situation and combat service on board
- Seamless integration into existing naval communication networks
Further details on the TETRA digital radio solution can be found on the official Motorola Solutions website:

In addition to the portable TETRA handheld radios MTP8550Ex, stable and uninterrupted communication between the units on board is ensured.
Integration into marine and BOS networks
The system is fully integrated into the existing naval infrastructure and is interoperable with the communication networks of the German Armed Forces and other security organisations (BOS).
- Connection between ships in the harbour and teams on land
- Communication between naval vessels at sea up to 15 km away
- Optimised coordination for routine and emergency operations
Frigate Sachsen as a pilot project for the navy
The F124 Sachsen is the first ship to be equipped with TETRA digital radio as part of this project. In addition to the installation on the Sachsen, the technology has already been successfully introduced as a test and training system for the navy.
Axel Kukuk (Motorola Solutions):
"Successful naval operations depend crucially on the safety of personnel and equipment. With the new digital radio solution, the German Navy can digitalise its processes on board, increase efficiency during routine operations and react quickly in emergencies such as fires or accidents."
The future of marine communication
With the new TETRA digital radio solution on the frigate Sachsen, the German Navy is focussing on modern and networked communication. The system could serve as a pilot project for other naval vessels and revolutionise digital communication in the navy in the long term.
