Frigate 126: Rheinmetall supplies light naval guns

Damen Naval, the Dutch prime contractor for the design and delivery of the future frigates 126, has announced that the contract to equip the newbuildings with a medium-calibre gun has now been awarded to Rheinmetall.

MLG27-4.0

The Unterlüß-based company will produce a modernised version of the well-known light naval gun, then named MLG27-4.0, whose core component is the BK-27M revolver gun. The gas-operated revolver gun can be operated with belted or belt-fed ammunition. It combines low weight (gun with barrel 102.3 kilograms) with a high rate of fire (1,700 rounds/min) and is also used as armament for the Eurofighter, Gripen and Tornado. Rheinmetall claims that the BK27 is the most successful on-board cannon on the market, with over 3,000 systems sold.

Compared to the previous MLG27 - according to Rheinmetall - the new MLG27-4.0 is a next-generation defence system with a fully digital system architecture. In addition, a few technological innovations have been implemented, such as an integrated simultaneous tracker, adjustable area fire and direct effective firing at external target coordinates. A daylight camera, infrared sensor and laser rangefinder are now standard features of such weapon systems.

The F126 frigate will be equipped with two such systems. The contract now awarded therefore comprises eight MLG27-4.0 systems, but also includes an option for four more if necessary.
