From a Navy press release:

On Saturday, 18 December 2021 at 11 a.m., the "Spessart" will return to Kiel from the Aegean Sea after 194 days under the command of Captain Rolf-Heinrich von Beber of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2). The civilian-crewed ship of the squadron travelled around 17,900 nautical miles.

You can't do without a tanker!

"This year was the second time we were deployed as part of a permanent NATO group. This emphasises how important the refuelling tankers are for the German Navy and Germany's allies. We are now looking forward to finally being home to spend a peaceful Christmas with our loved ones," reports Deputy Nautical Officer Martin Wachsmuth.

Rest and Repair

After returning to their home port of Kiel, the crew will have time to spend Christmas with their families before entering a period of repairs and tests for the ship and crew in the new year. The commander of Flotilla 2, Flotilla Admiral Axel Schulz, emphasises: "The fuel tanker Spessart has been in service for 44 years, but the successes are solely due to the skill and motivation of the civilian crew. I would like to thank the crew for their tireless efforts and wish them a relaxing holiday after this busy year at sea."
