Hapag-Lloyd finances green

Last December, the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd ordered six mega container ships with a capacity of 23,500 TEU. Financing has now been finalised in accordance with the Loan Market Association's Green Loan Principles. A loan totalling USD 417 million has been provided for the first three ships with a term of twelve years. The lending consortium consists of eleven banks, and the loan was structured by KfW IPEX-Bank and BNP Paribas.
Lease financing with a volume of USD 472 million and a term of 17 years plus construction period financing was agreed for the remaining new buildings. This was structured by the Commercial Bank of China Leasing.
The green financing was made possible by Hapag-Lloyd's decision to install high-pressure dual-fuel engines. These are particularly fuel-efficient and therefore reduce CO2 emissions by 15 to 25 per cent. As a result, the new container ships not only fulfil the requirements of the Green Loan Principles, but also the technical test criteria of the EU Taxonomy for sea and coastal freight transport. The ships will be built in South Korea. They are due to join the Hapag-Lloyd fleet in 2023.
