Since mid-February, the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour (CVH 550) in Norfolk, Virginia. The aim of the visit is to obtain "Ready for Operations" status. This certifies that the crew can take off and land the new F-35B safely. An American test team from the Joint Programme Office (JPO) is on board for this purpose. They carry out various manoeuvres, tests and inspections. These include flight tests involving ships from the US 2nd Fleet and American aircraft. On their way across the Atlantic, the Italians were able to complete a three-day manoeuvre with the US destroyer StoutF/A-18 from Carrier Air Wings 7 and a P-8 Poseidon from Reconnaisance Wing 11.
The contact for all logistical questions during the stay in Norfolk is the American aircraft carrier John C. Stennis. Its crew supports the Cavour in supply, personnel transfer, security and medical matters.
The F-35 Pax River Integrated Test Force (ITF), a team from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, is responsible for flight training. Its approximately 200 soldiers have experienced mechanics and test pilots as well as two specially equipped F-35Bs.
