New mission for the DATTELN: On 12 January, the 45 men and women cast off from their home port of Kiel to set course for the North Sea. There, the boat will become part of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG 1). Commander Tanja Merkl believes the boat is well prepared for the tasks ahead: "The crew of the minehunting boat DATTELN has undergone comprehensive operational and maritime deployment preparation this year as planned. Participation in SNMCMG 1 is therefore the goal for which we have prepared intensively." A soldier from the US Navy is also on board. He will be demonstrating his sonar skills as part of an exchange programme.
The diverse tasks currently planned also include participation in HOD operations off the Danish and Dutch coasts. During these regular Historic Ordnance Disposal (HOD) operations, mines and munitions from the world wars are detected and destroyed.
The Datteln is not due to return to Kiel until the beginning of April.
