Mitsubishi launches MRRV

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is also celebrating: the first of two new vessels for the Philippine Coast Guard was launched today (26 July) with colourful balloons and ribbons at the shipyard in Shimonoseki, southern Japan. The Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRV) will be used for SAR missions, including in heavy weather and for patrols in offshore and coastal areas. Operations against smugglers will be at the centre of activities. The MRRVs, which are almost 97 metres long and have a displacement of 2260 tonnes, can travel at a maximum speed of 24 knots. The operational radius is 4000 nautical miles. In addition to RHIBs, the crew of 67 also has a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) at its disposal for the missions. This enables the ship to search for objects under water.

The first unit will now be further equipped and then undergo intensive testing. It will then be christened and handed over to the operator at a ceremony in Manila in May next year. The second ship is scheduled to be launched in November 2021 and handed over in September 2022.
