The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard is to receive three new ships. The Dutch Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards for the construction of medium-sized units. The „Cutters“ are due to enter service in 2029 and will replace their predecessors, which have been in service for over 25 years. Their range of tasks includes police operations, border surveillance, patrol services and search and rescue missions.

The missions focus on combating drug smuggling and arms trafficking, irregular migration, illegal fishing and environmental offences. The Damen Stan Patrol 4100 units deployed to date date back to the late 1990s. Their increasing age is leading to rising maintenance requirements and costs, making it necessary to replace them.

The new Damen Stan Patrol 5009 vessels measure around 50 metres, significantly exceeding their predecessors. The greater length noticeably improves seaworthiness and operating time, especially in demanding conditions. Modern sensor technology, including powerful radar and infrared systems, enables effective monitoring even at night and in restricted visibility. The so-called Axe Bow also contributes to the improved sea behaviour, reducing pitching movements and lowering fuel consumption at the same time.

Each ship also carries a fast interceptor boat. These boats are specially designed for the recovery of so-called „go-fast“ smuggling boats and are larger than previous models, enabling them to maintain high speeds even in rough seas.

The commissioning of the new units will sustainably strengthen the operational capability of the coastguard. The Dutch Navy is thus making a

significant contribution to security and law enforcement in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
