The French Navy will receive 11 survey systems. A contract to this effect was signed in Paris on 11 February. Each system consists of two units of the electrically powered, unmanned Aliaca drone developed and built by Airbus. The contract includes training and the supply of spare parts. The first units are to be delivered to the German Navy as early as this year.
The Aliaca drones can be launched from aboard a ship using a catapult and have an endurance of three hours, which corresponds to a range of 27 miles. The system can also be used in adverse conditions with electro-optical or infrared sensors. The dimensions of the Aliaca drone are manageable: with a length of 2.2 metres and a wingspan of 3.6 metres, it can carry a maximum payload of 16 kilograms. Aliaca is powered by a powerful electric motor. Two people can get a drone ready for use within 15 minutes.
The drones can be controlled from the ships during the flight. Images and data are transmitted to the mother in real time. Aliaca is intended for various missions, including tactical reconnaissance, close-range surveillance and reconnaissance of suspicious ships. SAR operations, traffic monitoring and compliance with environmental regulations can also be monitored in domestic waters.
