New exhibition in the Flanders Bunker

On 31 August, the eve of International Anti-War Day, the Kilian Memorial Association opened its new exhibition "An anti-aircraft helper from Kiel - photos and memories by Hans Krohn".

At the age of 15, Hans Krohn was also drafted into the navy in Kiel in 1944 and stationed at the Nordmarksportfeld in the anti-aircraft battery. As this battery was close to the city, he experienced many air raids at first hand. His experiences there shaped his life, as well as those of around 200,000 other underage air force helpers throughout the Reich during this time.

Hans Krohn, born in Wilster in 1928, lived in Kiel-Wik at the lower end of Feldstraße during the Second World War. His father treated many marines as a dentist. During air raids, the family sought shelter in the nearby Flanders bunker. As a contemporary witness and member of the Kilian Memorial Association, Hans Krohn supports the current exhibition in the Flanders bunker with stories and his extensive collection of pictures.

As an aspect of possible war traumatisation, the exhibition is integrated into the exhibition "Bombs and Traumas. Uncanny legacies of war". On 12 October, a contemporary witness talk with Hans Krohn will take place in the Flanders Bunker. Further events in this context can be found at www.mahnmalkilian.de. The Kilian Memorial Association is looking for further contemporary witnesses and material on the topics of anti-aircraft helpers, naval helpers, the Second World War, persecution, flight and naval history.
