New names at the Kiel naval base

1 Oct 2021 | News, Armed Forces | 1 comment

Tirpitzhafen is now called Kiel naval base. The southern outer mole will be called Gorch-Fock-Mole in future and the outer mole will become Oskar-Kusch-Mole.

The background to this new naming was explained in marineforum.online already discussed here - It is now official and will be implemented.

Based on the Bundeswehr's 2017 Traditions Decree, it was instructed that in future only the Bundeswehr's own 65-year history would apply to the line of tradition. In addition, places and persons from the resistance against terror and tyranny are also included. This reorganisation means that the previous namesakes, Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz (1849 - 1930; founder of the High Seas Fleet in the German Empire) and Admiral Reinhard Scheer (1863 - 1928; commander of the High Seas Fleet in the Battle of the Skagerrak in 1916), no longer fit into the Bundeswehr's line of tradition. This decision was not only met with support. Opponents of the renaming are still not happy with the navy's decision to this day.

  1. A waste of taxpayers' money. These would have been much better spent on the comrades in the navy.

AsOMt d.R. with home port Kiel at that time, it remains the Tirpitz harbour for me....
