The NH 90 has gradually replaced the Sea King, which has proven its worth for decades. The helicopter's modern and flexible equipment enables a wide range of missions.

In the 1980s, Germany increasingly focused its defence strategy on interoperability. Due to the very high development costs of new aircraft, the joint initiative of a medium-weight helicopter was born, which could be used not only for the transport of people and material, but also for military rescue missions, special forces operations and support in emergency and disaster situations by various NATO partners. France, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany were able to consolidate their requirements for a multi-role helicopter and, as part of the multinational NATO Helicopter 90 (NH 90) project, turn a helicopter family in the nine to eleven tonne class for transport and naval missions into a reality.

The multinational NH 90 exists in two basic versions:
