Update from 22/04/2024
The following is a list of all incidents since mid-October 2023 that have occurred in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden between the Houthi militias and primarily the US Navy, but also the allied and coalition forces - insofar as they are known or confirmed.
Editorial office marineforum.online
The news portal "Military Times" (Arlington/VA, USA) reports regularly on the incidents in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden area and maintains a regularly updated, chronological list in English.
It is made available here in German translation to emphasise the explosive nature of the theatre of war in this sea area. In RED The attacks on Western naval units are marked, GREEN Attacks on civilian ships, in BLUE characterised by counterattacks on Houthi positions. Special events appear written in bold. International spellings have not been Germanised.
Explanation
The armoury of the Houthi militias includes
- High-flying, long-range anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM),
- Low-flying anti-ship cruise missiles (self-seeking, anti-ship missile, ASHM),
- Low-flying land-attack cruise missiles (guided to coordinates),
- one-way-attack (OWA) uncrewed combat aerial vehicles (UCAV),
- Floating, uncrewed surface attack drones (uncrewed surface vehicles, USV),
- floating, unmanned underwater attack drones (autonomous underwater vehicles, AUV),
also
- unmanned high-flying reconnaissance drones (URAV).
If a clear classification is not possible, the abbreviation UAV (uncrewed aerial vehicle) is used. Designations used in the publication have been simplified in order to provide an overview.
The overview charts of the IISS (International Institute for Strategic Studies, London) on the known missile systems in Yemen provide information on the types, but not the quantity. This - and the constant resupply from Iran - makes it impossible to estimate the actual potential of the Houthi militias.
A roughly calculated total of deployed and destroyed weapons from the chronological outline shows a frightening picture (October to mid-April):
On Merchant ships were fired:
8 UCAV, 14 ASHM, 34 ASBM.
On Warships were fired:
170+ UCAV, 30 ASHM, 12 ASBM, 3 USV, 1 AUV.
On Yemeni soil destroyed have been since 15 January 2024:
49 UAVs, 170 ASHMs, 2 ASBMs, 8 USVs, 2 AUVs, 3 SAMs, 1 ground station, 6 armouries.
Roughly speaking, the Houthi militias were at least "consumed":
230 UCAV, 265 ASHM/ASBM, 11 USV, 3 AUV, 3 SAM.
Summary
Over 270 weapons have been killed by the Huthi militias by sea against merchant ships and warships have been used.
One about the same number of weapons could before their use by US forces (US Air Force) destroyed on Yemeni soil become.
32 merchant ships have been directly attacked and damaged - One was sunk. First fatalities on board at the beginning of March.
Warships were approached directly more than 90 times - none have been harmed as of 17 April 2024.
The damage caused by the weapons used by the Huthi - with the exception of merchant ships - is extremely low, but the material and financial cost of defence is enormous, considering that up to 2 missiles and other weapons can be deployed on each approaching weapon for safe defence. According to the portal "The War Zone", American destroyers had already deployed over 100 Standard Missiles (SM-2, SM-6) by mid-February - each costing 4 million US dollars! Until Mid April costs in the amount of one billion dollars which must be invested for replacement. Defence against attacks at sea is an extremely dangerous and costly attrition scenario. Apart from a negotiated solution for the entire Middle East region, the protection of merchant ships by warships can probably only be achieved in the long term through a parallel and decisive fight against offensive weapons on land.
MILITARY TIMES (edited translation)
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October, Iran-backed Houthi fighters have sent a relentless barrage of missiles and attack drones at merchant ships and naval vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The Navy is now arguably engaged in a proxy war with the Houthis stationed in Yemen, and the men and women aboard American destroyers in the region are facing a The naval forces have been confronted with a level of maritime hostility not seen since the Second World War.
