The "Yasen" class (Project 885/885M, 133 metres, 12,000 tonnes submerged) is the benchmark for Russia's nuclear-powered attack submarines. The type boat K-560 "Severodvinsk" has been on its keel for 30 years, but the subsequently modified M-boats only followed a good 15 years later. Construction numbers 2 and 3, K-561 "Kazan" and K-573 "Novosibirsk", are already in service with the Northern Fleet - the following three boats, K-571 "Krasnoyarsk", K-564 "Arkhangelsk" and "Perm", are to be assigned to the Pacific Fleet, with K-571 currently undergoing its functional trials with the Northern Fleet. The boats have four launch modules on both sides, each of which can be loaded with either four 3M55/3M54 Oniks/Kalibr sea target missiles or five 3M14 Kalibr cruise missiles.
First "Zircon" submarine
According to the latest information from Russian news agencies, "Perm", construction number 6, will be the first boat in this class to be equipped with launch containers from which the new 3M22 "Zircon" hypersonic weapons can also be deployed - this will require minor structural modifications. This boat is scheduled to be launched before the end of 2024 and handed over for use in 2026. The "Zircon" has already completed its first test launches in the White Sea in autumn 2022.
Building programme
Three more boats are to follow, all of which have been under construction since mid-2020 at the latest: "Ulyanovsk", "Voronezh" and "Vladivostok". As a "Zircon" capability must then be assumed, these boats will probably be distributed evenly between the two fleets.
"Zircon" on land
The "Zircon"-carrying units "Gorshkov" above water, "Yasen" under water and, after adaptation, also the mobile coastal batteries K-300P "Bastion" (SSC-5 Stooge) will provide a wide range of threats with hypersonic weapons.
Moin,
the place of service of the multipurpose nuclear submarine "K-573" "Novosibirsk" ("Новосибирск") is the Pacific Fleet.
The exercise "Umka-2022" ("Умка-2022") was carried out during the relocation voyage; here the "K-573" "Novosibirsk" ("Новосибирск") fired a maritime target missile from the Chukchi Sea on 16 September.2022, the "K-573" ("Novosibirsk", NATO: "Oscar-II" class) fired a sea target missile of the type "Oniks" ("Оникс" [NATO: SS-N-26 "Yakhont"]) at a sea target from the Chukchi Sea; this sea target firing was carried out together with the nuclear submarine K-186 "Omsk" ("Oмск", NATO: "Oscar-II" class), which fired a sea target missile of the type "Granit" (NATO: SS-N-19 "Shipwreck").
The transfer voyage on the North-East Passage (known in Russian as the "Northern Sea Route") was carried out by the multi-purpose nuclear submarine "K-573" "Novosibirsk" ("Новосибирск") together with the strategic nuclear submarine "Knyaz' Oleg" ("Князь Олег" [project no. 955A, NATO designation: "Borey-A"]); both nuclear submarines arrived in their new home port of Vilyuchinsk on 28 September 2022 and are serving in the Russian Pacific Fleet.
