Technical vulnerability of Russian units - Are the sanctions taking effect?

Ukraine keeps meticulous records of all incidents in the navy of the Russian Federation. In early June, for example, Kiev reported an engine fire on the Udaloy-class submarine destroyer ADMIRAL LEVCHENKO (project 1155, 164 metres, 8,500 tonnes) of the Northern Fleet in the Barents Sea, even though this ship would never be expected in the Black Sea. Although not yet confirmed by Russia, the damage on board does not appear to be insignificant. However, another aspect is more important: the engines built in Mykolaiev, Ukraine, in the 1980s have not been able to be supplied with original parts and manufacturer expertise since 2014 anyway, but due to the sanctions against Russia, the technical safety equipment can now probably not be adequately maintained either with Western replacement technology or from national production. Hence the perceptible increase in the technical vulnerability of Russian fleet units.

  1. Moin,

On 20 August 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced the departure of the large Project 1155 anti-submarine ship "Admiral Levchenko" ("Адмирал Левченко") as part of scheduled training activities in combat training areas in the Barents Sea. All weapon systems and the functionality of all on-board systems were checked.

The gas turbines of this class were originally produced by the company "Motor-Sich" (which is located in Ukraine), but for several years now these turbines have been serviced and overhauled by Russian companies (in this case the "Saturn Scientific Production Association" [NPO "Saturn"] in the Russian city of Rybinsk) if necessary. Corresponding capacities have been created in Rybinsk.

The report from Ukraine at the beginning of June 2024 about the considerable damage to the large anti-submarine ship "Admiral Levchenko" ("Адмирал Левченко") is, in my opinion, an exaggeration. On the Russian side, considerable efforts have been made for several years to build up a repair capacity for Soviet gas turbines using only Russian companies.

The new-build frigates of the "Admiral Gorshkov" class (project 22350) are now equipped with gas turbines manufactured entirely in Russia.
