Ukraine: Russian Black Sea fleet further decimated

The Ukrainian military reported that they had attacked the Russian landing ships "Yamal" and "Azov" as well as the "Konstantin Olshansky" captured in 2014 (all three Ropukha-class, approx. 112 metres, up to 4,400 tonnes). A communications centre and other infrastructure used by the Russian Black Sea Fleet on the annexed Crimean peninsula were also hit. The landing ships were or should also be used against Ukraine in the future. It was not clear from the reports how the targets were hit.

The Russian-appointed governor of Sevastopol, however, announced that air defences had shot down more than 10 rockets and cruise missiles from a Ukrainian air strike over the port. A 65-year-old man was killed when three houses were hit by shrapnel. The city administration then only mentions five damaged small ferries and 17 buses and a shared taxi that were hit.

There is no independent confirmation of the Ukrainian and Russian information. There were also no photos of the damaged or destroyed ships on the internet, as is often the case. As in any war, the extent of the casualties and damage cannot be immediately verified.

According to Ukraine, it has destroyed around a third of the Russian Black Sea fleet since the start of the war. Satellite images show that Russia is moving a large part of its already decimated fleet further east to its own port of Novorossiysk in the face of the wave of attacks.

This is not the first time that the Ukrainian armed forces have disputed the Russian Black Sea Fleet's area of operations and thus its naval supremacy off the Crimea. This has now also led to Ukrainian grain being exported by sea without Russia's permission.
