Amsterdam - Hydrogen corridor from Oman to Europe

The world's first import corridor for liquid hydrogen through the Sultanate of Oman, the Netherlands and Germany was agreed in a Joint Development Agreement (JDA). This corridor will connect the port of Duqm in Oman with Amsterdam in the Netherlands and important logistics centres in Germany, including Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) and the Port of Duisburg.

The corridor is intended to enable the commercial import of liquid hydrogen from EU-compliant renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO). The supply chain is based on proven technologies for the liquefaction, transport, storage and distribution of liquid hydrogen. Advanced ship designs will ensure net-zero vaporisation, avoiding cargo losses during sea transport, reducing unit freight costs and setting new standards for efficiency and sustainability.

The agreement envisages Oman supplying large quantities of green hydrogen to Europe from 2029. However, a number of key components are still required for this, such as the construction of storage, export and import facilities in the ports involved. The distribution networks and distribution modalities in the Netherlands and Germany also still need to be harmonised. This also includes planning for gaseous and liquid hydrogen pipelines (some of which already exist), rail connections and the integration of inland waterway transport.

This agreement is an important step in Oman's endeavour to become a global leader in the export market for green hydrogen. At the same time, this initiative strengthens Europe's energy security and supports the EU's decarbonisation goals.
