Just one ping: WTD 71 revolutionises sonar performance analysis

Submarine hunting is a highly complex business. In order to remain at the cutting edge of technology, WTD 71 is developing a demonstrator for modern sonar performance analysis. Sonar performance analysis is an important tool in submarine hunting and in determining the betrayal range of own submarines against possible enemy detection. It predicts how reliably and up to what distance a potential underwater target can be detected by an active or passive sonar system. In the case of an active sonar system, a sonar ping is emitted at a specific source level. It travels through the water and loses intensity due to various propagation effects, resulting in a loss of propagation. After reflection at the...

NOK Brunsbüttel - Sliding gates for 5th lock chamber in inlet

The Kiel Canal is still the busiest artificial waterway in the world in terms of the number of ship passages. In recent months, however, it has often been in the headlines for rather negative reasons. Time and again, damage to the lock gates or incidents involving ships have caused a stir. Technical defects regularly lead to ships ramming into the embankment or becoming stranded in the canal, blocking the waterway. Such incidents are reminiscent of the "Ever Given", which blocked the Suez Canal for six days in March 2021 - with noticeable consequences worldwide. Another accident occurred at the beginning of the year: the French "Eco Levant" ran aground...

By hook or by crook: Sinking of the cargo ship Melanie Schulte

Shortly before Christmas 1952, the cargo ship Melanie Schulte disappeared almost without a trace in the North Atlantic. The accident has now been reconstructed at the Helmholtz Centre Hereon. The sinking of the multi-purpose freighter Melanie Schulte west of the Scottish coast on the night of 21 to 22 December 1952 is considered one of the worst disasters in German merchant shipping after the Second World War. All 35 crew members lost their lives and it was not until weeks later that wreckage and a lifebuoy washed up on the Scottish coast. The parts indicated that the ship, which had a displacement of 10,000 tonnes, had broken apart. The Melanie Schulte, which only entered service on 9 November 1952...
