US Navy present in Europe

We have reported several times about the US destroyers stationed in Rota. So what's new? The Americans took part in two operations, demonstrating their interest in a European presence. As reported in the Navy Times, manoeuvres were carried out last week to exercise interoperability with NATO allies - in the Baltic Sea and in the Aegean.

The USS Arleigh Burke teamed up with Standing NATO Maritime Group 1, which includes Canadian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch frigates, to "show presence" in the Baltic Sea.

The USS Porter carried out telecommunications exercises and maritime manoeuvres with Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 - which includes ships from Italy, Romania and Turkey. Germany is involved with the fuel supply ship Spessart.

The USS Porter sailed on 30 October as part of a routine patrol in the Black Sea. The U.S. Navy confirmed that F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft from U.S. Air Forces Europe are standing by to support the destroyer, while P-8A Poseidon aircraft from U.S. Naval Forces Europe are also standing by to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support.
