Naval honours: Survey on the significance of wounded badges

Interrogation of wounded badge

To all readers and users of the Marine Forum:
Consultation on the possible design of a wounded badge

Decorations and service medals have been part of the military tradition of the German naval forces for decades. But what significance do decorations, medals of honour and service medals actually still have today? Some wear them regularly and with pride, others wear them more reservedly or not at all. Particularly within the navy, decorations and service medals often have a strong commemorative and comradely value. They are an expression of recognition, remembrance and solidarity. For others, however, they seem to play an increasingly minor role. Why is that?

These and similar questions are currently being addressed by the „Veterans“ Round Table". Initial results of a survey on the possible design of a wounded badge indicate that a clear majority of participants are in favour of its introduction in principle. The survey with a total of 1,715 participants is currently being analysed in depth and supplemented by qualitative interviews with the wounded. At the same time, the focus is increasingly shifting to a more fundamental question:

What is the overall significance of awards, service medals and decorations within the Bundeswehr today?
