DLR announces in a press release: In April 2026, Frank Sill Torres took over the professorship „Resilience of Maritime Systems“ at the University of Bremen and is now officially head of the DLR Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures. His research focuses on model-based, quantitative methods for assessing the resilience of critical maritime infrastructures such as offshore wind farms and harbours, with the aim of predicting their rapid recovery after disruptions. In addition, close synergies are to be created between the university and DLR and resilience research is to be firmly anchored in teaching.
The new professorship focuses on the security and resilience of critical maritime infrastructures (KRITIS). The focus is on the question of how offshore wind farms or harbours, for example, can remain functional despite disruptions or return to a functional state within a reasonable period of time. Research is primarily being conducted into model-based methods for the quantitative assessment of resilience. While qualitative approaches only provide rough estimates, this research aims to mathematically calculate the resilience of cyber-physical systems.
