Spanish Navy - Recruiting young talent with cartoons

The Armada with advertising on its own behalf

Of course, the Armada also has the usual problems with staff regeneration - but in Spain they are now taking a more long-term approach: With an animated film aimed (not only) at the youngest generation. An attempt is being made to revive the connection to Spain's history and national colours - as well as pride in the country's flag - through first names (a Spaniard has at least three of them). During a visit to the Naval Museum in Madrid (well worth seeing, by the way!), a grandfather (who was a naval officer himself) explains to his grandchildren („... the flag is just a boring old cloth ...“) the connection between their first names „Isabel“ and „Juan“ and Spain's history - from the historic discovery of America to Spain's most recent expedition to Antarctica.

And the Armada has been involved in all of this for almost 250 years. Sailed or sailed on ships, mostly under the „Rojigualda“, the highly visible national flag in red-yellow-red signal colours with the characteristic coat of arms and the banner „plus ultra“ (further out) of Spain's seafaring explorers, held by two pillars as a symbol of the Strait of Gibraltar. The whole thing is somewhat clichéd, but understandable against the backdrop of unbroken Spanish national pride.
