The Ministry of Defence is procuring thirteen new boats for the Royal Netherlands Navy, which will replace the current Fast Raiding Interception Special Forces Craft (FRISC). The contracts with the De Haas Maassluis B.V. shipyard in Rotterdam were signed in March and the first so-called Future Fast Interceptors (FFI) are to be delivered in around 3 to 4 years.
The new boats are more modern, faster and more heavily armed than the FRISC, have an improved sensor and communication system and are less easy for enemies to recognise. In addition, the physical strain on personnel has been reduced. Innovations to the hull and seats soften hard impacts at high speed in combination with high waves.
The FFIs will become part of the Maritime Special Operations Forces. The ships are intended for boarding and other special operations, including those involving the highest levels of violence.
This will also please our navy, as German forces, e.g. from the naval battalion, regularly practise with parts of the Mariniers Corps.
